THOMAS DEMAND

Thomas Demand joins us in Sydney on a site-visit for a new Kaldor project and speaks with the senior curator of photography, Judy Annear, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Known for his highly luminous and compelling photography of 1:1 models, which he constructs from paper and cardboard, his works are often based on pre-existing photographs or press images and are destroyed once the photograph is taken. Demand’s practice interlaces sculpture, architecture and photography and forces us to reconsider our perceptions of a highly mediated world. Demand studied at the Düsseldorf Academy and at Goldsmiths College in London. He has exhibited extensively internationally, including a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2005. Currently he is a Getty Scholar at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles. In addition to a future Kaldor project in Australia, in May 2011, Demand’s work will be on display in the new contemporary galleries as part of the John Kaldor Family Collection.
