Absorption

EMILY GALICEK

I visited Asad Raza’s installation on a quiet Monday morning, and there was an incredible sense of peace when walking into the space, as the soil seemed to absorb all the ambient sound from outside.

Absorption
Vest from Agatha Gothe-Snape's Discrete Relations/Discreet Relations, 2019, to be worn as part of Project 34: Asad Raza, Absorption, 2019, Carriageworks, Sydney

I visited Asad Raza’s installation on a quiet Monday morning, and there was an incredible sense of peace when walking into the space, as the soil seemed to absorb all the ambient sound from outside.

I really liked the sense of collaboration inherent to the work, from the artistic responses to the conversations with the cultivators.

My favourite element was Agatha Gothe-Snape’s Discrete Relations/Discreet Relations vests, which were both playful and sensitive toward the provenance of the project and the Kaldor family history. They also looked great on video!

Absorption
Four silver reflective vests, lined with 1970s patterned fabrics, hang on coathangers on a clothes rack inside a bare room. The floor of the space is entirely covered in soil.
