Transported Into Another World
NASTIA GLADUSHCHENKO
I still remember the moment Marina came and sat opposite me. Her presence was so strong, but soft, and her look was so powerful that I couldn’t help but look in amazement at the honesty she was showing me in her expression.
I saw Project 30 by Marina Abramović at the Hickson Bay Wharf in 2015. I had never seen much of her work in the past and was curious to check it out.
As we walked in and saw people doing physical exercise, counting rice and staring at each other, I was fascinated and amazed at how obedient everyone was being. It was like being transported into another world. After going through some of the exercises it was my turn to sit on a bench and wait for someone to sit opposite me and stare at me.
I still remember the moment Marina came and sat opposite me. Her presence was so strong, but soft, and her look was so powerful that I couldn’t help but look in amazement at the honesty she was showing me in her expression.
From that moment on I realised how important it is to be honest with yourself and the world around you and have been moved to change my profession and lifestyle. Her work is powerful not only in the moment but also in the way it brings up feelings and thoughts later on.
Another highlight was the tenderness with which I was tucked into my camp bed in this show. I thought the whole project was a really special experience and wish that I had the chance to experience more of her work.
