Allora & Calzadilla

Allora & Calzadilla
Eight young people stand in a line – five facing forwards, and three facing the opposite direction, in a small, bare, white circular room. The people are dressed in similar grey T-shirts, tank tops and sweat pants with matching grey shoes, arms upstretched, holding hands, with serious, focused expressions.
Six young people stand in a line, dressed in similar grey sportswear, each with one hand outstretched, and serious, focused expressions, in a bare, white room.
Ten young people sit in a V-shaped line, dressed in similar grey sportswear, with arms clasped around each other’s shoulders, in a bare, white room with a black rubber floor.
Five young people stand in a line, dressed in similar grey sportswear, arms upstretched, holding hands, with serious, focused expressions, in a bare, white room.
Four young people stand in a line, dressed in similar grey sportswear, each with one hand outstretched, and serious, focused expressions, in a bare, white room.

Revolving Door, 2011

Allora & Calzadilla have collaborated as an artist duo since 1995. Through their experimental practice combining performance, sculpture, video and sound, they explore the histories and meanings embedded in our culture. In their work Revolving Door, 2011, a group of dancers spontaneously form a line and rotate in a circular motion, literally sweeping up visitors as they circle the space. The choreographed movements are drawn from political protests, military marches and chorus lines, a reflection on the many different gestures we create in unison.

Allora & Calzadilla have presented solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, National Museum of Art, Oslo, and Serpentine Galleries, London. They represented the United States at the 2011 Venice Biennale and participated in documenta, 2012, in Kassel, Germany. In 2012 they presented Kaldor Public Art Project 26: Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on 'Ode to Joy' for a Prepared Piano, which was reprised for Project 35: Making Art Public in 2019.

The presentation of this artwork was supported by the Lewin Family Foundation.
