Gilbert & George were first brought to Australia by John Kaldor in 1973 to for the 3rd Kaldor Public Art Project, The Singing Sculpture, at the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney and at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. They wore tailored suits and painted their hands and faces in bronze metallic paint, singing slowly along to an old musical hall tune of ‘Underneath the Arches’ for five hours at a time, circling like music-box figures. A mesmerising event, The Singing Sculpture presented the artists as ‘living sculpture’, blurring the boundaries between art and life and breaking new ground for artists and performers of their generation. Almost four decades on, Gilbert & George return to Sydney and Melbourne to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Kaldor Public Art Projects with a series of talks and events.
